What is a counterbalance forklift?

What is a counterbalance forklift?

Counterbalance forklifts are the most widely used type of forklift worldwide. These forklifts are named for their design, which includes a heavy counterweight that balances the weight of the load carried on the forks extending from the front of the vehicle. This counterbalance is crucial for maintaining stability, preventing the forklift from tipping forward when lifting heavy loads. Counterbalance forklift trucks are known for their efficient driving and handling speeds, maneuverability and ability to navigate inclines.

How are counterbalance forklifts powered?

Counterbalance forklifts are primarily powered by two engine types:

  1. Internal Combustion (IC) Engine Counterbalance Forklifts: these forklifts are powered by petrol, diesel or liquid propane gas (LPG) engines. They are suitable for outdoor use and applications requiring heavy lifting or continuous operation. IC engine counterbalance forklift trucks are often preferred for their higher lifting capacities and faster refuelling times compared to electric forklifts. They are commonly used in construction sites, lumber yards and outdoor storage yards.
  2. Electric Counterbalance Forklifts: an electric counterbalance forklift is powered by electric batteries and is ideal for indoor use due to their zero emissions and quiet operation. They are commonly used in warehouses, distribution centres and manufacturing facilities where ventilation is limited or noise levels need to be minimised. An electric counterbalance forklift is also known for its lower operating costs compared to IC engine-powered forklifts.

Where is the counterbalance located?

In combustion counterbalance forklift trucks, the counterbalance is built into the rear of the unit, whereas battery-powered or electric forklifts achieve counterbalance through the weight of the batteries installed within the unit. Counterbalance trucks can be equipped with either air-filled (pneumatic) or cushion tyres. This allows them to navigate uneven surfaces, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor operations. Counterbalance forklifts are heavier and larger than other forklift trucks, resulting in a wider turning radius. Handling the load beyond the truck's pivot increases the risk of instability if not properly managed.

How are industrial counterbalance forklifts used?

Due to their versatility and adaptability forklift trucks are widely used. This makes counterbalance forklifts a key part of daily operation in various industries.

  • Warehouse & distribution: In warehouse and distribution settings, counterbalance forklift trucks are utilised for efficient loading and unloading of goods, maximising storage space with their ability to navigate narrow aisles and lift heavy pallets to considerable heights.
  • Manufacturing: In manufacturing facilities and areas, these forklifts aid in the movement of raw materials and finished products, facilitating smooth production processes. Generally these industrial counterbalance forklifts are equipped with features for handling heavy loads and manoeuvring in tight spaces within factory layouts.
  • Construction: In the construction industry counterbalance forklifts are essential for handling heavy materials on uneven terrain, contributing to the timely completion of projects. Construction companies commonly choose to use heavy-duty forklifts with rugged tires and increased ground clearance for navigating rough terrain and outdoor environments.
  • Agriculture: In agricultural environments industrial counterbalance forklifts assist in tasks such as loading and transporting crops, equipment, livestock feed and heavy supplies like fertilisers and seeds. They also aid in transporting bulky materials such as hay bales, feed sacks and equipment around farms and storage areas.

Expand versatility with forklift attachments

Counterbalance forklifts can be equipped with a range of forklift attachments to enhance their versatility and efficiency in various tasks. Popular attachments include fork extensions, which extend the length of the forks to accommodate larger loads. Side shifts allow operators to adjust the position of the forks laterally, facilitating precise positioning during loading and unloading. Bale clamps are commonly used in agricultural settings for handling bales of hay or straw, while rotators enable the rotation of loads for optimal positioning. Other useful attachments include platforms for elevated work, drum handlers for moving barrels and sweepers for cleaning tasks.
